There’s been no shortage of speculation about the future of the Star Wars franchise since 2017’s Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi hit theaters, and now the premiere of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker is coming up fast. The first trailer for The Rise of Skywalker offered some intriguing hints as to how the Skywalker saga will conclude, including the return of a key character from the original trilogy. Now, new footage hints at an ominous turn for one of the modern trilogy’s main characters.

The Rise of Skywalker brings back director J.J. Abrams to close out this arc of the iconic sci-fi saga after he helmed 2015’s franchise-relaunching Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens. He directs from a script he co-wrote with Academy Award winner Chris Terrio (Argo, Justice League). Star Wars: Episode IX is scheduled to hit theaters December 20, 2019.
